Seasons

The climate varies with altitude rather than season. It is generally temperate in the highlands and semitropical on the coastal plain. The coastal lowlands are hot and humid. In the highlands, days and nights are slightly cooler. The two main seasons are rainy and dry. The rainy season lasts from May to October. Prepare for dusty conditions during the dry season.

Regions

The Caribbean and Pacific coastal plains are hot year-round with temperatures rising to 38°C (100°F) in the summer months. January temperatures in Guatemala are approximately 30°C (86°F), and as low as 7°C (45°F) during the evening. The warmest months are March, April, and May with the average temperature in the capital reaching 34°C (93°F), but it can turn chilly by comparison at night.

In Quetzaltenango, the cold months have temperatures of around 24°C (75°F) during the day, but will fall to below zero at night; during the summer months the temperature rises to 33°C (92°F), again with cooler nights. The Caribbean coast is wet year-round.
